PLA vs PETG vs ABS vs Resin: Which Material Should You Choose?

Strength, heat, detail and finish all differ between PLA, PETG, ABS and resin. Here's a plain-English guide to choosing the right one for your part.

Choosing the right material is half the battle in 3D printing. The same part can succeed or fail depending on whether you picked PLA, PETG, ABS, or resin. Here's how we decide, based on how the part will actually be used.

PLA — fast, easy, great for prototypes

PLA prints cleanly, holds fine detail, and is the most economical option. It's ideal for visual prototypes, display models, and parts that won't see heat or heavy load. Its weakness is heat: leave a PLA part in a hot car and it can soften.

PETG — tough and weather-resistant

PETG is our go-to for functional parts. It's tougher and slightly flexible, resists moisture, and handles outdoor conditions better than PLA. It's a great middle ground for brackets, enclosures, and parts that need to survive real use.

ABS — heat resistance and smooth finishes

ABS tolerates higher temperatures and can be acetone-vapour smoothed for a glossy, near-injection-moulded surface. It's well suited to automotive-adjacent parts and enclosures that get warm. It needs a controlled print environment, which is why it's best left to an experienced shop.

Resin — maximum detail

Resin (SLA/MSLA) captures very fine detail and smooth surfaces that filament can't match — ideal for miniatures, intricate models, and small precise mechanical parts. The trade-off is that resin parts are more brittle and require careful post-processing.
